Located in a new residential neighbourhood of Burke Mountain, Smiling Creek Elementary accommodateS 430 students from kindergarten to grade 5. The 3,713 m², 2-storey school is situated on a steeply sloping and treed site, providing challenges such as tree retention, storm water management, and even re-routing of Smiling Creek itself. Construction consists of cast-in-place concrete foundations, tilt-up concrete wall panels, glulam beams and columns, and structural steel. Due to the steeply sloped site, multiple retaining walls are required throughout the site to provide level playing surfaces and parking lots for students, parents, and teachers.
